Before you go on any paddle, we recommend that you go through the "10 commandments" compiled by the instructors at Kayak & Canoe Inc.
- Check the weather forecast, in particular wind strength and direction and the likely impact of this on your planned trip.
- If paddling in a tidal area, check the time and height of the tide and the subsequent tidal effect.
- Work out how fast and how far you can paddle given the weather conditions and tidal situation.
- Make sure that you have suitable equipment for the trip that's in working condition.
- Wear suitable clothing for the condition and be prepared for the possibility of taking an unexpected dip.
- Pack a simple first aid kit to cope with such things as cuts, sprains, and headaches. Include any personal medications.
- Take plenty of water and food, plus a spare bottle of water.
- Make sure that you have the necessary paddling skills. This includes knowing what to do if you happen to capsize. If in doubt, get a lesson from a nationally accredited Australian Canoeing National Training Provider (NTP).
- Get some friends to go with you. There is safety in numbers.
- Let someone know where you are going and when you will be back.
