Need advice about which paddling gear to buy?

This is a compilation of some of the best pieces of paddling gear advice that we have been given. After reading the information provided here, please make sure to do your own research before making any purchases. Try out gear first wherever possible. If your local store doesn't offer a "try before you buy" sevice then it may be worth contacting your local kayak or canoe club to see if you can join them on a paddle or two. Paddlers are a friendly bunch who are usually more than happy to show off their stuff.
